Three exhibitions at the Getty Center celebrate French art of the late 1700s and early 1800s—the era of the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, and Napoleon’s empire.
Jacques-Louis David: Empire to Exile
February 1–April 24, 2005
A Revolutionary Age: Drawing in Europe 1770–1820
January 18–May 1, 2005
Drawn to Rome: French Neoclassical Sketchbooks and Prints
February 1–April 24, 2005
Jacques-Louis David: Empire to Exile explores the little-studied late career of the most influential European artist of the age. This is the first major exhibition of David’s work outside of France.
Complementing this Premiere Presentation are Drawn to Rome: Neoclassical French Sketchbooks and Prints, presenting rarely seen drawings and etchings of Rome by 18th-century French artists, and A Revolutionary Age: Drawing in Europe, 1770-1820, examining artists’ responses to the political and social turmoil of the age.
The exhibitions are located in the Exhibitions Pavilion, East Pavilion, and Research Institute Exhibition Gallery.
