Explore the Colorful World of Vincent van Gogh’s Irises
These expressive gift ideas feature one of the Museum’s most popular paintings. Painted in the last year of his life in the garden of the asylum at Saint-Rémy, Irises captures the delicate flowers’ movements and shapes, creating a variety of curved silhouettes bounded by wavy, twisting, and curling lines. Canterbury and St. Albans: Treasures from Church and Cloister (on view at the Getty Center through February 2, 2014) brings together two masterpieces of medieval English art: panels of stained glass from Canterbury Cathedral showing life-sized figures from the Old Testament are displayed alongside the St. Albans Psalter, a splendidly illuminated book of psalms. Uniting monumental glass painting with the art of book illumination, this presentation explores how specific texts, prayers, and environments shaped the medieval viewer’s understanding of these pictures during the great century of art making following the Norman Conquest of England.

These miniature reproductions of illuminated manuscript detail were hand painted by Claudia Tulifero in Florence, Italy. She prepares her own egg tempera with pure pigments and genuine lapis lazuli and paints on parchment. Each illumination is gilded with 23¾-karat pure gold leaf. The St. Albans Psalter is one of the most important, famous, and puzzling books produced in 12th-century England. It was probably created between 1120 and 1140 at St. Albans Abbey, located on the site where Alban, England’s first saint, was martyred. The manuscript’s powerfully drawn figures and saturated colors are distinct from those in previous Anglo-Saxon painting and signal the arrival of the Romanesque style of illumination in England. The St. Albans Psalter includes more than 40 full-page illuminations and over 200 historiated initials. Decorated with gold and precious colors, the psalter offers a display unparalleled by any other English manuscript to survive from the period.

The Ancestors of Christ windows at Canterbury Cathedral have near-life-size figures of the male ancestors of Christ, who once looked down on the choir and eastern extension of the medieval cathedral and priory church of Canterbury. Made of colored glass, with the details of the faces and costumes painted on the surface, the Ancestors of Christ windows illuminated the liturgical areas during all but the earliest services in the depths of winter, glowing pale blue at dawn and yellow and red at noon. Dating from the 12th century, the surviving windows from this series are among the oldest panels of stained glass in England, and they are significant examples of what was at the time a relatively new art—monumental stained glass. They are also considered to be among the most famous works of English medieval painting.

Paul Harrie is a Southern California artist who uses classical forms in his glass works, combining vibrant colors with elegant techniques. The precise striping in his glass sphere paperweights and perfume bottles is produced using tiny canes of glass wrapped around a central core.
