The Getty Center will welcome its 20 millionth visitor on Saturday, April 13, 2013.

“We’re delighted that 20 million people, from all over the world, have come to experience the collections at the Museum and the Getty Research Institute, the GRI’s vast art and architecture library and archives, and the Getty’s incomparable buildings and grounds,” said Getty President and CEO Jim Cuno.

Opened in 1997, the Getty Center is marking its 15th anniversary this year. Each year, the Getty welcomes more than a million visitors, half of them from outside Southern California. Designed by architect Richard Meier, the iconic landmark high above the Sepulveda Pass is home to the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Research Institute, the Getty Conservation Institute, and the Getty Foundation. Through its four programs, the Getty pursues its mission in Los Angeles and throughout the world, serving both the public and a wide range of professional communities with the conviction that a greater knowledge of the visual arts is crucial to the promotion of a vital and civil society.

April 13 coincides with a Family Festival in conjunction with the exhibition Looking East: Rubens’s Encounter with Asia. The Family Festival features dance performances and art-making activities for the whole family, ensuring a celebratory feel for the day.

In honor of the 20 millionth visitor, every guest that day will get a commemorative cookie. “We can’t determine precisely which guest will be the 20 millionth, so we plan to treat everyone as if they were,” said Cuno.
