The J. Paul Getty Museum will host its annual College Night on Monday, April 15, 2013, from 6pm to 9:30pm.

Local college students are invited to enjoy a night of special tours, live music by Cayucas, hands-on art projects, and more. This year, many activities complement the exhibition Overdrive: L.A. Constructs the Future, 1940–1990, which features iconic modern architecture in the City of Angels. Best of all, parking and admission to College Night are free!

Exhibitions and Special Tours

Students will get exclusive access to the Overdrive exhibition through illuminating curator-led tours. The exhibition features hundreds of drawings, photographs, architectural models, films, animations, oral histories, and ephemera documenting how Los Angeles rapidly evolved into one of the most populous and influential industrial, economic, and creative capitals in the world.

Also on view will be three additional current exhibitions: Japan’s Modern Divide: The Photographs of Hiroshi Hamaya and Kansuke Yamamoto; Looking East: Rubens’s Encounter with Asia; and In Focus: Ed Ruscha. Students will also be able to see highlights from the Museum’s permanent collection, including masterpieces by Van Gogh, Monet, and others.

In addition to the exhibitions, special behind-the-scenes tours will show how artworks are conserved and exhibitions are planned.

Student Projects and Hands-on Art Activities

A number of student-designed art projects will also be on view at the Getty that night, including contributions from Otis College of Art and Design, Santa Monica College, East Los Angeles College, College of the Canyons, and Pierce College.

Students can create their own works of art by participating in urban planner James Rojas’s workshop, where they can create a “Utopia” out of found objects. For a more informal project, students can use a variety of art supplies to denote Los Angeles landmarks on two massive maps of Southern California.

Music + Food + Drink + Etc.

When not spending time in the galleries or making art, students can enjoy the music of Cayucas and a DJ spinning throughout the evening. Attendees will receive a ticket for one free non-alcoholic drink and food item, and other food and drink will be available for sale. For a lasting memento of their evening, students can have their picture taken at an on-site photo booth.

Admission and parking are free. Reservations are encouraged.

This year’s College Night at the Getty Center was planned with the help of a student committee, including students from California State University, Northridge; Loyola Marymount University; Pierce College; Otis College of Art and Design; and University of California, Los Angeles.
