The fierce Amazons are featured in some of the most famous Greek myths.

Many great heroes, including Heracles and Achilles, tangled with warrior queens. But were they real? In Amazons: Warrior Women of the Ancient World on Thursday, February 26, 2015, Adrienne Mayor, author of the recent book The Amazons: Lives and Legends of Warrior Women across the Ancient World, discusses stories of women warriors, sharing new archaeological discoveries of battle-scarred female skeletons buried with their weapons as evidence that they were not merely figments of the Greek imagination.

Combining classical myth and art, nomad traditions, and scientific archaeology, Mayor, a research scholar in classics and history of science at Stanford University, reveals surprising details and original insights about the fighting women known as Amazons.
